A truly energized performer and a well known Rock star, Mellisa Etheridge made her presence felt in a unique style. This American singer, song writer and musician emerged as the face of the homosexual community and strove to champion their cause with unrelenting courage. She rocked the American Music Industry with her breathtaking numbers. Awarded the Academy Award for best original score in 2007, Mellisa Etheridge did it in style and started performing in Lesbian bars across Los Angeles. Born in 1961, this vociferous activist made small appearances at the Candy store in her initial years in the music world and side by side continued to perform in lesbian bars. Regardless of facing ire or rejections, she never lost her hope and she maintained her focus for a big break. She debuted with Island Records in 1986 and from then on there was no looking back. Climbing the ladder of success, Mellisa succeeded in leaving a mark as a singer who sings and fight for gay rights. In 1998, she made her first hit tune with “Bring me some water”. Mellissa Etheridge also won an Oscar in 2007 for her song ‘I Need to Wake up’ for the film documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’

In 1990, Mellissa Etheridge won the International entertainer of the year award at the 20th Annual Juno awards. Winning the Grammy Award for the best female vocal performance, ASCAP’s songwriter of the year, Gibson Guitar Award along with the GLAAD Media Award Mellissa Etheridge proved to the world that determined action goes a long way.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, she fought hard like a true champion and started her treatment. But this did not bring everything to standstill, there was just a slowdown and then like a blazing comet she made a rocking comeback in 2005 at the Grammy stage. In the year 2005 she made appearances on many T.V. shows. Breast Cancer could not stop her from doing what she loves to do nor could it conquer her dogged spirit. Mellisa Etheridge stands as a symbol of bravery for women with breast cancer and armed with her never say die spirit she is all set to bring forth her 11th studio album in 2009.
